Choosing and Installing a Sub-Woofer

Subwoofers are fundamentally woofers or a whole loudspeaker, which typically produce low frequency sound notes called the bass, ranging from 20-200 Hz. A subwoofer, which is not correctly set up or a design which is not suitable can actually compromise the quality of the sound produced. Subwoofers have become and indispensable part of the entire audio reproduction chain. It is highly significant to pick the right subwoofer for your system to ensure that you get the desired results. Most of the sound bars come preinstalled with a subwoofer, but they are not that powerful. If you wish to experience the real powerful feel of a subwoofer it is always advisable to find a good one suitable for your system.

The two most important specifications as per which your decision of buying a subwoofer would depend are power and driver size. One misconception that people may have is that more the power of the subwoofer, the louder sound it has to play. The power capacity just indicates the volume capacity of the machine but ultimately the volume is controlled by you. It is not necessary that a subwoofer of 1000 watt has to play louder than one of 100 watt. It is up to you to select the volume of the subwoofer. Therefore more power doesn’t indicate a negative aspect rather it defines a higher range of volume that can be played by it. Another feature, which is the driver size, needs to be bigger for the subwoofer to perform better. Typically a 12 inch driver is considered a decent size but if you want better sound quality you can even opt for 15 inch or more drive size. The drive has to work harder to produce bass sound waves if the size is smaller but it can be compensated with more power, therefore if the driver size is smaller you can opt for more power. The installation or the placement of the subwoofer is an essential factor too, since it contributes to the sound quality produced. Place it preferably in a corner or against the wall to get more volume. You can also sit at your listening spot and ask someone to move the subwoofer around to help you find the best spot which gives the best sound quality
